For
two months during the summer of 2005, a team of
six graduates from England and Kenya undertook an
expedition to a remote region of northern Kenya,
in search of rock paintings and their link to the
modern day culture of the Samburu people. Living and working alongside the
Samburu provided us with a genuine insight into
their history, traditions and beliefs, and
enabled us to record information on cultural
practices which has never been documented before.
The team were warmly welcomed throughout their
stay, and were fortunate to have been able to
witness and participate in a number of
fascinating traditional ceremonies, including the
mass initiation of the new warrior age-set
an event which only occurs once every fifteen
years. We would like to thank all of the Samburu
families we met and worked alongside during this
project - without your interest, support and
assistance, none of this would have been
possible.
This website is a record of what we
did during the expedition, and what we learnt as
a result. It is hoped that this will provide an
accessible means for people interested in the
project to find out more. If you would like any
further information, please dont hesitate
to contact us via the email address on the
contact section.
